Lover of Color

Anyone who knows me knows I am a self proclaimed lover of color. Color can make me incredibly happy, excited and cheerful. Although my wardrobe contains all shades of the rainbow, my last home’s interior design scheme did not.  My property in NH was not lacking color but my walls were relatively neutral. My living room was beige and all the other rooms were a shade of light blue or green. My reasoning behind choosing the paint colors was, as much as I love to paint, it tends to be taxing on my body so I knew I wanted to paint only once but bring color into the home by other means. The home did not get a lot of natural sunlight so I knew dark walls would not be suitable. Lastly, I knew I would be renting in the future and felt neutral colors were most appropriate.
If you love color but shy away from bright walls here are some ways to bring color into a room. These ideas are also perfect for renters too who don’t have the option to paint the walls.

Use pillows. I love pillows. They are a great way to add color, texture and pattern.color

Use furniture. Don’t have any fun, colorful furniture? Refinish some!

In addition to blocking light, curtains can bring color into a room.

Last but not least, a colorful rug can make a neutral room pop.

The Bed Debacle Part One

I have a drastically smaller room here in Denver, it is actually about 1/3 of the size I had in New Hampshire. Its a great room though, tall walls, loads of sun the only one issue is… where will I actually put my furniture? It is longer than it is wide, the shorter wall being where the large window is. Shy of taking a picture of my room (there are still too many boxes in there to get a good picture of it), I drew a diagram of it:
This room would be perfect for the bed in front of the window. Typically, I try to avoid this look but I think it will make the room look bigger and allow me to get another dresser in there (I also lost a walk in closet in this move). Generally my concern with beds in front of the window is it blocking natural sunlight but the window in this room is huge. It almost runs floor to ceiling, starting about four feet from the floor and goes to the ceiling (it ends up being about 90 inches in length).

Am I the only one who typically strays away from the bed in front of the window? What are you thoughts on this look?

The color white

“White…is not a mere absence of colour; it is a shining and affirmative thing, as fierce as red, as definite as black…God paints in many colours; but He never paints so gorgeously, I had almost said so gaudily, as when He paints in white.” – G. K. Chesterton
Lately I have been loving the color white. This is a total shock since I am a lover of color. The color white, in essence, reflects all color so often I use white as contrast to another color. This really allows me to emphasis the other color (example is fresh white trim accentuates the wall color) . But when I say I have been loving white lately, I find myself gravitating to rooms that use minimal color. It looks very clean, cool and calming.  The color white does represents purity or innocence. How great do these rooms look?

One of tricky things with decorating with all white is it can often look sterile. To avoid this, you want to use texture. All of the rooms above use texture, such as, wood paneling, chandeliers, sheer curtains on the bed or stenciled words behind the bed With the added texture elements the rooms no longer look cold and uninviting but warm and welcoming.

How do you feel about the all white rooms? Love them or hate them?

DIY a distressed dresser

In my last bedroom, I knew I wanted a softer feel. With the lack of sun I knew I’d have to keep the furniture white to obtain a soft, calm feel. I bought a very large antique white dresser and if had a smaller dresser perfect for the side of my bed. The issue was it was this:

This definitely did not fit the look that I was looking for in my bedroom. Rather than dismissing the dresser and buying another one, I want to refinished it. I chose to distress it.

The project was very easy. When distressing furniture you want a base color. Since I was wanted the piece to be white, I chose a dark base color. I don’t know the name, to be honest it was leftover paint from another project. It was a dark brown/green color. Here is the first coat:

Once the first coat dried I took a candle and ran it over the corners and other parts of the dresser. This left residual wax on the dresser (which you want). I then painted it the antique white that I wanted it. I ended up painting it with a large paintbrush but could have easily painted it with roller. I was not too concerned with it streaking. That’s the plus to distressing furniture, the goal is not to make it look perfect, it’s supposed to look worn. Here is the dresser after the wax and white paint.

Once it dried, I used a medium steel wool and rubbed it over the candle wax. With some elbow grease, the bottom coat started to show through and a distress look was created. I played around with the steel wool and the paint for a good hour. Slowly the piece started looking like less of a mess and more like a distressed pice of furniture.

It ended up being just the right piece for my bedroom. It is amazing what a little paint and some work can do.

A fancy Idea

I found this pin on Pinterest the other day. What a great idea! I love to make mundane daily things such as soap and sponges look and feel “special”. Nothing like a cake stand to make the kitchen look fancy!

Ode to black and white stripes.

I have found myself gravitating towards outfits of black and white stripes. To me it’s a fun take on a timeless and sophisticated look. I just bought this Carlson jersey blazer and wear it with just about any of my dresses. White, black, pink, green or floral, if you are like me and like to push the limits with fashion.

How great are black and white stripes in the home as well?
It’s easy to bring into the home. You can reupholster a chair. Ofcourse, I also love it paired with gold.

I absolutely love black and white wallpaper with a bold colored piece of furniture.
If that’s too much for you, you can always bring black and white stripe wallpaper to a smaller room like a hallway or entry way.

Still too much? Just bring in the stripes with curtains! Still makes an impression but not as much as a whole room full of black and white stripes.

How do you feel about the look of black and white stripes in the home? What other ways would you incorporate them into your home’s design.
