How to find the pendant for your home.

Pendants pack a big punch in any room. They aften seen in kitchens but can be in any room – living room, bedroom, office, etc. Since pendants hang from the ceiling, the eye goes directly to it when your walk in the room. Therefore, pendants hold a lot weight in a room and can dictate the feel of a room.

There are so many different styles and shapes of pendants that it can be an overwhelming decision. Here are a few ways to pick of the best pendant for your home.

1. Size. How big does it need to be?

If you have a large room, for the pendant to be scale, you will need a large size (or multiples filling up a large space). If the opposite is true, you will need a smaller pendant.

2. What style is the home?

The pendant should be of a similar style of the home.

3. Since the pendant is often the first thing the eyes hit in a room, use the pendant as a talking piece. Let it be unique and showcase your personality.

4. Consider other lighting in the room. To avoid the room feeling too busy, you would want to create a feeling of continuity.

5. Be purposeful. Remember it is a light and it serves a purpose of providing light.

Decorating with Greenery.

Often forgotten in interior design is the use of plants. The outdoors is often what brings people to Colorado, therefore, decorating with plants should come quite naturally. On an interior design level, there are many benefits to incorporating plants into you home.

100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life

For Christmas I received Jonathan Adler’s coffee table book, 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life. I love books like these because it often sparks some new ideas or offers a creative take on design. I thought I would periodically write about some of the 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life.

  1. “It all starts with a conversation pit”.

I think it is only appropriate for the book to start in the living/family room. For me, the living room is often the pulse of the home. Adler puts it best, “Conversation pits are one of the greatest legacies of modernism. I am not the most feng-shui-iest, but these spaces have an energy – a siren call – that draws you in for a moment of relaxed fun: the sine qua non of good design.

Conversation pits are architectural features that involve built in seating often located in a sunken room:

As you can tell from the pictures or history of design, conversation pits were incredibly popular from 1950 to 1970’s. Although, I believe we do have our own modern take on a conversation pits now. Often minus the sunken room and built in furniture but the concept is still the same – it is where people gravitate to in the home to lounge and chat. sunken5 sunken3 sunken4

What do you think? Does the home start with a conversation pit?

FLOR just recently solved a tricky situation for me in my home. My dinning room table is round and HUGE and trying to find a rug for underneath proved difficult. To fit comfortably under the table it needed to be at least 9.5 by 10 feet, which is near impossible to find. The only option would be to have a rug custom made is incredibly expensive. That is until someone mentioned FLOR.

If you are new to FLOR, it a company that creates modular carpet tiles. The rug is delivered in multiple carpet tiles which you have to put together. This allows you to create a “custom” sized rug, which was perfect in my case. This new concept, modular carpet tiles, have some awesome perks.

  • You can create a rug with the perfect dimensions. If you need a unique sized rug, you can create it without spending a lot of money. For even harder dimensions, you may cut the FLOR pieces.

  • Not only can you get creative with size, you can also customize the design and look of your rug. Go as crazy as your creative heart desires.

  • FLOR tiles are easy to clean.
  • I can attest, FLOR rugs are very easy to put together.

If you live in Denver, there is a FLOR in Cherry Creek located on 2500 E 2nd Street. The employees are incredibly helpful and are able to assist with the vision for your new rug. In case you were wondering, I ended up purchasing the Mod Cow in black for under my dinning room table.

Finding a use for license plates in the home.

I went on a hike this weekend and ended at Little Bear Saloon in Evergreen for lunch. Little Bear is an eclectic saloon in downtown Evergreen and the walls showcased license plates from different places of the world. I stopped to scan the walls to locate a New Hampshire plate but never did but the saloon reminded me that I have two unused New Hampshire license plates that I would love to put to use in my new home. Unsure of what to do with my license plates, I took to the Internet for some ideas. Lo and behold there are some great ideas for what to do with unused license plates.

Make them into bookends….

What would you do with your unused license plates? With so many transplants in Denver, I would imagine the community should have a good number of old license plates.
