The emotional side of real estate.

Real estate can certainly be a great investment and lucrative but there is also an element of real estate that can be emotional. A home will hold a lot of memories and emotions for a person. I often see that the emotional aspect of real estate surprises people when it creeps in. I saw it first hand with my own individual deals in the last three months. I recently sold my home that I lived in in New Hampshire for five years prior to moving to Denver and three weeks later I bought an investment home in Denver.

While in the midst of buying or selling a home, it is natural to take things a little personal or to heart. As a real estate agent, these emotions are not foreign and in a transaction it is important for the buyer or seller to feel them and help them move past. Additionally, emotions are going to feed on emotions, so it is important the real estate agent keeps their calm. If I get stressed, angry, mad, etc, it is only natural that my clients will follow suit.

So how can you manage these emotions? For a person that is buying or selling a home, the best thing is to keep your ego out of it. At the end of the day, there are going to be strong emotions on all sides of the deal and it is important to keep it in perspective that most have nothing to do with you. It is important to remember that on the other side of one deal are more memories to be made, experiences to be had and feelings to be felt.
